Pastor Maggie Cumings, 37, of St. James, passed away Thursday, Sept. 28, 2017 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester. Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 5 at First Lutheran Church in St. James. Visitation will be at the church on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. and one hour before services on Thursday. Margaret was born Dec. 16, 1979 in Chicago to John and Marilyn (Burgett) Lux. She graduated high school in 1998 from New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois; graduated Carleton College in Northfield in 2002; and received her Master of Divinity degree from the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago in 2009, after serving in the Lutheran Volunteer Corps and several parishes in Chicago and Milwaukee. She was married to Michael Cumings on May 20, 2006 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Milwaukee, Wis. She served two parishes in Minnesota after ordination: First Lutheran Church in rural Cosmos and Beckville Lutheran Church, and later First Lutheran Church in St. James. She was an effervescent, wise, witty, comforting, and cheerful presence in her many communities, including Friends of the Library and community theater productions in addition to her parish work and work in the greater Synod. She had innumerable friends and admirers and will be sorely missed.
Margaret is survived by her husband, Michael; and two children, Zoe and Leo; mother, Marilyn; sister, Claire (Lux) Winnard; brother-in-law, Doug, and their children: Cora, Philip, and Vivian; father- and mother-in-law, Gary and Lexi Cumings; brother- and sister-in-law, Peter and Emily Cumings, and their children, Fiona and Ivy; and brother-in-law, Paul Cumings. Margaret was preceded in death by her father, John.
