Grace Pearl Barnes 96, of Sleepy Eye, died on May 28, 2018

Grace Pearl Barnes 96, of Sleepy Eye, died peacefully on Monday morning, May 28, 2018, at Divine Providence Community Home in Sleepy Eye. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m., at Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye and will continue on Friday from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m., at the church. Service will be held at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Evan, on Friday, June 1, at 10:30 a.m. The clergy will be Pastor Rebecca Krogstad. Interment will be at Home Cemetery in Sleepy Eye. Grace Pearl Barnes was born on Sept. 10, 1921 in St. James, to Theodore & Anna (Oren) Shellum. She grew up and attended school in Albin Township. Grace married Collin "Mike" Barnes on Jan. 23, 1944 at Albion Lutheran Church. They farmed in Home and Prairieville Townships until retiring in 1975 at which time they moved to Evan. She was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Evan where she sang in the choir and was active in the Ladies Aid. Grace enjoyed playing cards, fishing, canning, and gardening. She also enjoyed waitressing and cooking at the Evan Inn for many years. In 2012, Grace moved to Divine Providence Community Home. She lived there until she was most recently called home. She enjoyed listening to music, playing bingo, and visiting with friends and family while enjoying coffee and cookies.

She is survived by her children: Roger (Marlene) Barnes of Mankato and Jean Bloemke of Sleepy Eye; 13 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, sister, Marlys Schwartz of New Ulm and sister-in-law, Dorothy Shellum of Nicollet. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Collin, sons: Gary and Larry Barnes, grandson, Craig Bloemke, three brothers and three sisters.
