Violet Fern "Vi" Anderson, 89, of Madelia, MN died on July 13, 2018, at the Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato. Visitation will be on Thursday, July 19, from 5 to 8 p.m., at Sturm Funeral Home, Pilgrim Chapel in Madelia and will continue on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m., at Faith Lutheran Church-Madelia. A memorial service will be held at Faith Lutheran Church-Madelia, on Friday, July 20, at 10:30 a.m. The clergy will be Pastor Salim Kaderbhai. Interment will be at the Riverside Cemetery in Madelia. Arrangements are with the Sturm Funeral Home, Pilgrim Chapel in Madelia. On line condolences may be left for the family at www.sturmfh.com.
Violet "Vi" Fern (Carstensen) Anderson was born April 6, 1929 in Nelson Twp., Watonwan County, to Thomas Carstensen and Rosa (Rabe) Carstensen. She was baptized May 12, 1929 at home and confirmed December 29, 1941 at First Lutheran Church, Madelia by Rev. H.O. Lee. Vi attended schools in Madelia, St. James and graduated with honors from Albert Lea High School in 1947. She worked in offices of Lesota Tool Co. in Albert Lea and Minnesota Protective Insurance Co. in Madelia. Vi married Robert S. Anderson on November 21, 1948 in Albert Lea. She was active at Faith Lutheran Church in Madelia, holding offices in WELCA, Miriam Circle, served as Sunday School Teacher, Lay Catechist, Council Secretary and Trustee. Vi was a Girl Scout Leader, Cub Scout Den Mother and Past President of VFW Auxiliary #3842. She also assisted her husband in office during the 30 years of their plumbing business. In her free time, she enjoyed reading, sewing and being with family.
Vi is survived by her daughter, Jane Unzeitig of Mankato; sons: Jim Anderson of Madelia, John (Nancy) of Mankato; grandchildren: Anna Ploog, Michael Unzeitig, Jacob, Tyler and Aaron Anderson; great-grandchildren: Ryan Ploog, Ben Ploog, Bailey Marie Schwartz; along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Anderson; parents, Thomas and Rosa Carstensen; sisters: Rosella, Helen, Irene and Norma; brothers: Henry, Norman, Harold, Gerhardt "Butch", and Vernon "Sarge" Carstensen; sisters-in-law: Norma Carstensen, Kathleen, Averna, Evelyn, Gussie, Esie, Dolly and Thelma Anderson.
