Hubert Branstad, 92, of St. James died on Friday, Nov. 9, 2018 at Mayo Clinic Health Care System, St. James. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 14, at First Lutheran Church in St. James with Rev. Andy Hermodson-Olsen and Rev. Matthew Seegert presiding. Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery with military honors provided by the St. James Veterans Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 4:30 until 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Sturm Funeral Home in St. James and one hour before services at the church Wednesday. Hubert Davis Branstad was born Aug. 23, 1926 in Leland, Iowa, the son of Helmer and Hazel (Peterson) Branstad. Hubert grew up in Leland and graduated from Leland High School in 1944. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1944 - 1946 and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands. On August 15, 1948 he was united in marriage with Fern Juhl in Leland, Iowa. The couple farmed in Leland until 1956 when they moved to New Ulm where Hubert started his automobile career. In 1961, they moved to St. James and Hubert worked for Crowley Motor Company/Nelson Motors until his retirement in 1991. Hubert was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Masonic Lodge/Shriners, and First Lutheran Church. He received many “top salesman” awards from Ford over the years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and was an avid fast-pitch softball fan.

He is survived by his wife, Fern Branstad of St. James; children: Harley (Gwen) Branstad of LaSalle, Jim (Pat) Branstad of St. James, Gloria (Randy) Voth of New Ulm, and Julie (Robbie) Schmidt of St. James; grandchildren: John (Shannon) Branstad, Anne Branstad and special friend Dann Roberts, Jeff (Patria Lawton) Branstad, Jamis Voth, Raya (Luke) Shibilski, Carolin Alfonso and special friend Angel Ortiz, Andrew Schmidt and special friend Amanda Palluck, Rachel Thielman, Danny Thielman, Leslie Hackett (Daniel Brown), and Kristenza Nelson; 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Helene Iverson of Lake Mills, Iowa; sister-in-law Lorraine Branstad of Albert Lea, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his daughter Janean Thielman, his parents, and his brothers Carl and Edward.
