Shirley Ann Kopecek, 78, of St. James, formerly of Pemberton, died Sunday, Nov, 25, 2018 at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Clair, with Father Timothy Hall officiating. Interment was held Friday, Nov. 30th at Freeborn Cemetery. Shirley Ann was born Dec. 23, 1939 in Freeborn County, the daughter of Herman and Florence (Young) Johannsen. She was baptized and confirmed at Freeborn UCC. Shirley graduated from Freeborn High School the class of 1957. She married Joseph Kopecek on Jan. 30, 1960 in Wells. Shirley worked at Wilson and Co. in Albert Lea and was a bank teller in Freeborn for 20 years. After moving to Pemberton she managed the MotorMart for several years until her Multiple Sclerosis advanced. In July of 2016 Shirley moved into Pleasantview Good Samaritan Society in St. James due to her MS, where she received excellent care from the kind and caring staff.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years Joe of St. James; children: Patty (Dave) Brandts of St. James, and Linda (Randy) Kemnitz of Calif; six granddaughters: Kelly (Tom) Johnson of Searles, Tammy Johnson (Kent Winters) of Butterfield, Holly Johnson of Mankato, Madison Kemnitz of Chicago, Ill., Morgan and McKenna Kemnitz of Calif; four step-grandchildren: Oniel, Sonti, Andre and Mariah Brandts; three great-grandchildren: Logan and Noah Johnson and Halle Johnson; siblings: Barbara McDonald of Emmons, Joan (Hollis) Grorud of Albert Lea, and Jim Johannsen of Albert Lea; aunts: Martha Ignaszewski of Wells, Elvira Young of New Richland, and Betty Johannsen of Albert Lea; uncle Norbert Groskreutz of Wells; several nieces, nephews, cousins and their families. She is preceded in death by her parents.
