James (Jim) Wolner, 74, of Apache Junction, Arizona died on Friday, April 10, 2009 at Mercy Hospital in Mesa, Arizona from complications of cancer.
A memorial service was held on Wednesday, April 15, 2009 in Apache Junction. Burial will be at a later time in Long Lake Cemetery in rural St. James.
James (Jim) Oscar Wolner was born on November 22, 1934 to Oscar and Sophia (Johnson) Wolner in Long Lake Township in rural St. James, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed at Long Lake Church. He attended District 12 school for grades 1-8 and graduated from St. James High School in 1952. He farmed with his dad and drove a livestock truck.
He was married to Karen Jensen at her parents home in St. James. They lived on the home farm until he became allergic to farm chemicals and was forced to quit farming.
He found work in the taconite industry and moved to Northern Minnesota living in several range towns and settling in Hoyt Lakes. He married Elsie Starken. He worked for Erie Mining mainly as a truck driver and service truck driver. They spent their retirement winters in Apache Junction, Arizona and summers in Hoyt Lakes and later Park Rapids, until they moved to Apache Junction permanently.
Jim’s hobbies were hunting, fishing and traveling. After his retirement, he began carving diamond willow canes. Many friends and relatives have received a beautiful cane as a remembrance.
Survivors include his wife, Elsie; sons, David of Hoyt Lakes, MN, Jerry (Eileen) of Byron, MI, Richard (Michelle) Saranac, MI, Barney (Joan) of Parker, CO; stepsons, Bruce (Barbara) of Hoyt Lakes, MN, Gary (Jeine) of Palo, MN and Todd (Terry) of Centerville, MN; sister, Glenys Hotzler of Park Rapids, MN; sister-in-law, Lucille Starken of Chisholm, MN; brother-in-law, Harvey Boutain of Menahga, MN; 10 grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Muriel Ommodt, granddaughter, Shanna Wolner; nieces, Beverly and Marsha Ommodt; two sisters-in-law and 11 brothers-in-law.
