Roy Jenkins, 77, of St. James, Minnesota died on Saturday, June 27, 2009 at his home in St. James, Minnesota.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Augustana Lutheran Church in St. James with Reverend Gregory Hall officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in St. James.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 30, 2009 from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Sturm Funeral Home and will continue for one hour prior to the services at the church on Wednesday.
Roy Jenkins was born on October 4, 1931 to George and Cecile (Hockel) Jenkins in Faribault County on a farm near Winnebago, Minnesota. He was baptized and later confirmed on May 20, 1945 in the Lutheran faith. He grew up in the Winnebago area and graduated from Winnebago High School in 1949. After graduation he attended Mankato State University from 1949-1952, and served in the US Army from 1952-1954 with Radar School in El Paso, Texas then stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska. He returned to college and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1955.
After teaching for one year in Buffalo Center, Iowa, he married Marjorie Kaus in Iowa Falls, Iowa on June 30, 1956. They lived in Ivanhoe, Minnesota until 1974 where he taught physical education, health and social studies. He also coached football, baseball and assisted in basketball. After receiving his Masters from South Dakota State in Brookings, South Dakota the family moved to Comfrey, Minnesota where Roy served as the High School Principal and Athletic Director. He also received his Education Specialist Degree from Mankato State in 1980. Retiring to St. James, Minnesota in 1986, Roy continued to be active in his church and his community, serving on church councils in all three communities, Ivanhoe, Comfrey and St. James. He was also a member of Lions in all locations, serving as a past president in St. James.
Roy was a professional life member of the State High School Coaches Association, the State High School Athletic Directors Association, and the National Educators Association. He was elected Teacher of the Year in 1974 while working in Ivanhoe. He enjoyed being a member of the “Three Penny” coffee group, several bridge clubs, playing golf, gardening and reading. It was important to Roy to help others. He loved volunteering for his church and community. He also cherished spending time with his family and friends.
Survivors include his wife Marjorie Jenkins of St. James, MN; daughters, Lori Kay (William) Kratz of Ludington, MI, and Lynnae Jean Grack of Winthrop, MN; three grandchildren, Taryn Kratz, Steven Kratz and Trevor Grack; sister, Janet (Granville) Smith of Cottage Grove, MN; brother, Marvin (Joyce) Jenkins of Woodbury, MN and several nieces and nephews.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents; brother, James and sister, DeeAnn Ziemer.
