Jean Marie Swam was born on April 7, 1918 to Bernard and Francis (Harper) Swam in Fairmont, Minnesota. She grew up and attended school in Fairmont.
On December 28, 1941 she married Willard B. Crowley in St. James. They lived down south while Willard was in Army training and then she lived with her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Roy and Catherine Crowley while he was in the military stationed in Europe where he was held as a prisoner of war.
