People still have a sense of humor and like to have fun

It’s a serious world out there with government shutdowns and threats of shutdowns, a slow economy, and a whole host of other problems. In the midst of it all, it is refreshing to know that the majority of us still have a sense of humor, can laugh at ourselves and others, and just plain like to have fun.
I was reading through my weekly dose of local newspapers this morning (yes we do read other newpapers here at The Plaindealer) and how good it was to find communities just like ours all having some sort of summer festivals, carnivals, fairs, special celebration days, and of course, the Fourth of July.
I do hear some people complain about these events saying, “Oh it’s just the same old thing we have always done,” or “Wonder how much all of this costs to put on,” and finally “It’s the same people always in charge.” To all who would voice such complaints I say, “Thank goodness we continue to have the same old events that bring people together to have fun and fellowship with each other,” “Thank goodness the same old people are in charge, beats sitting on your duff and wallowing in self pity and boredom,” “And I am glad some things don’t change, there is too much uncertainty in the world anyway.”
As for those who gripe, they exist in every community and for the most part need to be ignored. They would complain about a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow or anything else positive that encourages and brightens our average day.
I attend many of these town events and happenings and find that indeed they are fun, they do lighten a sometimes heavy spirit and help all of us to escape reality just for a brief moment. There are plenty of things happening in all of our communities that are good for us!
I hope that you will take advantage of the many things yet to come this summer right here in St. James. The Watonwan County Fair is always one of my favorites. I enjoy capturing the highlights of the fair through the pictures I take. I especially enjoy it when I think what it means to all the young people who take part showing their livestock and exhibits that they have worked so hard to prepare and get ready during the year. Of course there is also the delicious food at the 4-H stand that I enjoy way too much. The Watonwan County Fair begins July 20-24, 2011.
Have a great summer. Get out and enjoy it with your family and friends, and above all, LAUGH!
