Here it is time for the Watonwan County Fair, all of the excitement will start next Thursday as the things kick off. This time of year always brings back memories of growing up on the farm. You had to get all of your records in order for judging, you had to get the animals worked with so that you could handle them in the show ring. The pigs were always a challenge, but somehow it all worked out in the end.
Then there was the extra work that had to be done at home before you could get to the fair. The beans had to walked before you could spend time enjoying the fair in the evening. The extra chores that needed to be done at the fair, it seemed like it took forever to get them done before you had to go home and finish things at home. (That is what mom and dad always said don’t let it take you so long to do fair chores next time.)
As I got older, things did not seem to take as long as they did when I was younger, maybe because I was the only one left at home to do them and the chores had become fewer. Never the less, fair time was always a highlight of the summer.
Then came the time that I was the Secretary of the Fair Board, the week of the fair was a long one. From early morning till late night you were on the move and I can tell you that being on the Fair Board you really did not see the fair. What you saw was the hustle of people coming and going. The questions, the problems and the lost parents, were sometimes the highlight of the day or evening. It is hard to believe that parents can get lost at the fair. The first time I announced that the parents of this young child, that was standing in front of  the loud speaker, heard that it was his parents who were lost and not him what a smile on that little face. It became a joke after a while that at the Watonwan County Fair there were not lost children just lost parents.
So, take some time to go out to the Fair next week, enjoy all of the exhibits that the 4-H and FFA members have worked hard on for the last year. Don’t forget to take in the Creative Arts Building also.
Remember to support the local groups with their food stands that in turn help our community.
