Dear Editor,
On Saturday, October 22 60 plus boys and girls from the surrounding area attended the annual Pheasants Forever Youth Hunt sponsored by the local Pheasants Forever Chapter. The event which is held at the Watonwan Game and Fish Club was met by cool temps and blue skies making for excellent weather conditions for this event.  Young hunters from the ages of 11-17 were given the opportunity to not only hunt birds but to partake in a number of activities held at the Club.
The day started with registration at 7:00 a.m. and ended at around 4:00 with a bird cleaning demonstration. The young  hunters, the adult mentors, dog handlers and many parents who attended were fed breakfast and a hardy dinner during the day.
I had the opportunity to guide two different groups of young hunters during the day and was very pleased at the firearms safety awareness and good sportsmanship that was displayed during the day.  I have hunted most of my adult life but never had an opportunity as a youngster to take up this sport so I would encourage all adults with a son or daughter in this age bracket to sign them up in 2012, it could be an activity they continue way into their adult life.
I hope that the young people who took part in the days activity took the time to thank those in charge.  It wouldn't hurt for the adults in attendance to do the same. The Pheasant Forever Chapter spearheaded by Dennis Malmgren and a handful of members who helped really put on a show. Thanks to whoever donated all the food and refreshments. Thanks to the St. James Bus Service, who bused the hunters back and forth to the hunting land.  Thanks to the volunteers who manned the activities at the Club and thanks to all the groups that donated money. Finally, thanks to Watonwan Game and Fish for hosting the days activities. I’m looking forward to doing this all again in 2012.
