Solutions to keep Vikings here

Dear Editor,
I recently had an op-ed published in the Minneapolis paper (StarTribune, 11/7/11) talking about my involvement seeking a legislative solution to keep the Minnesota Vikings in the state after their lease expiration in January. I continue to receive many positive comments from Minnesotans across the political spectrum that are open to the promise that a new stadium building project will create jobs, and that any public investment will use non-tax financing options and fees that will fall primarily on those who use the stadium and attend Vikings games.
This week, Senate Republican leadership announced meetings at the Capitol on Nov. 29 and Dec. 6 in order to give a public forum to all parties to discuss the options available as we seek an answer to keeping the Vikings in Minnesota. This was a bold and necessary step to keeping lawmakers, the governor and officials on task while opening the doors for public comment.
In our southern Minnesota neighborhoods, we know that Vikings games are an important part of winter weekend and purple has been sewn into our social fabric for 50 years. We have all shared social experiences over football games and understand that the business of Vikings football also filters down to local taverns and newspapers. That’s why I am working to find a solution to not only keep the team here, but one that works with our needs for job creation and expanding our state’s economy. As I have said, special circumstances are needed for legislation to accomplish goals this large, and I will assure a solid return on any public investment.
