I suppose I should be thankful that we live in a nation where we get to pick and choose our leaders every 2, 4 and 6 years. Don’t get me wrong, I am very thankful. I just wish we had better choices. Let’s be honest it is usually the same ones or those that are super rich. Who else can afford to run for any office? (And that’s becoming true at even the local level).
Thus far the Republicans have not produced anyone worthy of a vote for President. The Democrats have a leader who has not established a successful track record in four years. If Ronald Reagan were alive we would be asking the question, “Are you better off than you were four years ago?” The answer is clearly no!
So what gives? The answer is not a simple one and has many facets to it.
Every candidate and incumbent really needs to do a reality check? I cannot personally think of one person running for public office today or an incumbent, at any level of government, who clearly is in touch with the “Average American.” They certainly aren’t in touch with someone who is unemployed and struggling to make ends meet, they clearly are not in touch with someone who is without health insurance and suffering from a dreadful disease, they clearly are not in touch with someone trying to help a student through college, and most of them are clearly not in touch with someone who has a spouse, a son or daughter serving in war somewhere around the world.
So who are the people running our nation? The majority are ones who have grown up with a silver spoon in their mouth, never worked at a real job for the most part of their life, and whose genuine interest and concern for others extends about as far as the end of their own noses.
Furthermore, I think the exact same things could be said about those who are corporate executives and lead some of our nation’s largest companies and firms.
It is not hard to understand what is wrong with our country today, why our government doesn’t work, why the rich get richer, and the poor suffer more.
What’s the answer? Short of an absolute collapse or revolution, my natural instincts tell me there is not an answer. That is terribly pessimistic, but it is also reality.
To prove my point, I seriously doubt if more than one or two readers out there will respond to my opinion. I wish they would, because I would love to be corrected and set straight on this matter. Give me some hope, tell me it is not so and that things will get better, there will be leaders, like cream, that will rise to the top between now and November 2012. I believe the American people are more frustrated and disenchanted than I have ever seen them during my lifetime. Something must give and it must give soon. Politicians and present leaders, wake up and do something, right or even wrong, just do something!
