It’s not too early to start thinking about giving to others

Sue Renz from Women of Today just stopped by my office to give me a press release about the Christmas Sharing Tree program. I talked to Linda Buller at the Community Building who is collecting “Coats for Kids,” and she tells me they desperately need winter coats in good condition for the little ones and children.
For the majority of us 2011 has been a stretch, but in reality we’ve done okay and in fact are pretty blessed with what we really need. Not everyone is so fortunate, the year has been difficult for  several reasons, one of which is the economy.
What’s our responsibility? The good book tells us “God loves a cheerful giver”. It is not too early to start thinking about how you can cheerfully give to others. The best plan is one that is thought out as opposed to last minute. That applies to charitable giving as well as giving to your family and friends.
Giving now, or planning what you are going to give, will be easier than waiting until the end when you may find yourself a little strapped for cash.
I’m glad organizations like Women of Today and the Christmas Sharing Tree Program, Coats for Kids, Samaritan’s Purse, “Christmas Shoebox” and several others start early and make opportunities for giving available to us while we are still not so rushed.
We can’t give to everything, so now is the time to think about some of your favorite charitable giving organizations and plan what you will give or how much you will give in the way of cash donations. I personally am more for the local ones because I know they have very little, if any, overhead expenses, and my entire gift goes to help others. Larger groups are good, but in reality they have to have some administrative cost to get things done. That’s okay and it is good for some, I would rather just keep my charitable giving as local as possible, just a personal preference.
Here’s another thought on the subject. Get your kids involved in your plan for giving to others less fortunate this year. It’s never too early to help your kids think about the importance of kindness and generosity towards others. We live in a world that is to focused on “what’s good for me,” instead of helping others.
There is nothing so moving as a little one with a kind heart and a generous spirit. They are a great influence in an otherwise “greedy” world.
Actually, when I consider it, the world is greedy, but at the same time there are an awful lot of really caring and giving people out there.
Experience Thanksgiving and Christmas in the true spirit of giving!
