Most of us remember the song from the musical “The Sound of Music” about Maria’s “favorite things...” I thought I might share with you this week some of my favorite things about the fall season and hopefully it will stir up some good thoughts in your heart and mind as well as you think about your’s.
One of my favorite things in the fall was burning leaves on Saturday morning with my dad. I can still smell them. I don’t get a chance to do that much anymore as most cities regulate pretty tightly the burning of leaves. But when there is a burning day I’ll be sure to take advantage of it. I think the Saturday morning leaf burning was more of a bonding time than anything else with my dad. I always recall the hot dog lunch my mom would have waiting for us, along with apple cider and apple pie-just like they bake at the First Lutheran Church in St. James-GREAT!
Carving pumpkins...that was really fun. I understand there may a shortage of the orange seeded cherished prize this fall. Say, how many of you have made pumpkin from scratch for your pies? I personally don’t think it is worth the effort, Libby’s is much tastier and a great deal easier. I do love the acorn and zucchini squash, there’s just something about an acorn squash with brown sugar and butter or fried zucchini squash that makes my mouth water. By the way, remember when “Trick or Treat” was safe? You knew everyone in the neighborhood and there really wasn’t any concern about going door to door. Oh, how sadly the times have changed. Though I do think here in St. James it is still pretty much a fun event and the Halloween Parade has become a favorite of mine personally. Thanks so much to those who sponsor this for the kids. The costumes are great!
Another favorite thing growing up as a kid was hunting deer with my dad. Now our deer in Colorado are the Mule Deer variety and I can’t say that I ever really developed a taste for them . They feed on aspen bark and a lot of sage brush. I did talk to a friend here in St. James recently and I am trying to get him to invite me out to his very plush deer-tree house during the season. He assures me corn-fed deer are very tasty. Yum, yum!...I can’t wait to try deer steak marinated in teriyaki sauce. This friend says they are heavenly and unless you know you are eating deer you would think it was a fine beef steak. Anyway, I’m hoping I get a chance to go. Say, what does a deer license cost and when do you have to get one?
Without a question Thanksgiving Day is just the best. After retiring from ministry, we now live across the street from our daughter, son-in-law and three granddaughters, our youngest daughter and grandson live about three blocks away, our son is still in the Army in Colorado, Thanksgiving is a big family day in the old three story Victorian home, just like it was as a kid growing up. Everything about Thanksgiving Day is so wonderful..eating, games, football (University of Colorado vs Nebraska on Thanksgiving weekend, it doesn’t’ get any better.) My favorite part, baking all the pumpkin pies!
Another great late fall treat was when we lived in western Nebraska for 10 years. The day after Thanksgiving we would go out and cut a Cedar Christmas tree. Before you say “yuk” hear me out. We had an abundance of Cedar trees in western Nebraska, most farmers, and including the state highway department appreciated you cutting one down. Here is the best part about a Cedar Tree. Cut one that has no berries, the smell is less. Wash it down good with a hose and let it stand for a couple of days. Put it in the tree stand and keep watered and by Christmas day it is a brilliant green, bringing them inside get’s them growing again. They display ornaments very nicely and smell great. Most don’t like them because they do not have a perfect symmetric shape, but if you look carefully you can usually find a real nice one.
These are just a few of my “favorite Fall things. I hope I have helped jog your memory and maybe encouraged you to create a few new ones along the way.
