In the last two weeks I have personally known three people, unemployed for a lengthy period of time, find very good paying jobs. On the real estate market I can think of two homes that have been sold. At the retail level I know of those who have recently made some purchases they had been postponing for the last 2.
None of these things are earth shattering. However, if I am hearing of these things in my rather limited world, I must ask the question are some of the reports that you find usually buried in the back of larger national newspapers or at the end of television news report more substantial than might be thought? I offer this question up in light of most front page news which would have us believe the economy continues to plunge.
I think this is hype to sell news and I do think the economy may be “crawling” its way back to existence, slow for sure, but better than it was last year.
What’s with the doomsday reports day in and day out? Bad news sells better and faster than good news explains some of it, but that is not all.
As a nation we must come to the stark realization that media(television, radio, internet, Facebook) has its hooks in us, they control our thought process, our way of life, our behavior. A trained psychologist or counselor will tell you that there was a time when media was a reflection of our lives and culture. I for one do not think that is the case anymore, we reflect what media tells us is real or unreal far more than the way it used to be. Be assured, media has its own agenda and when media moguls do not agree with current national leadership or anything else they will be bent on changing it. Presidents today, for example, are elected by the press, not the voters. Media will start early on in an election promoting candidates and by and large that is how people will vote.
Now you might think that makes it seem as individuals we are mindless, to some degree we are. We blindly portray what we read and see in the media outlets around us. Hollywood promotes a society without moral boundaries and that is exactly what we have become.
Reality TV is the latest thing being watched by the nation. Is it reality? Hardly! I tune it in just often enough so that I can know what I am talking about. Who really lives like “Sister Wives,” or the “Kardashians?” No one that I know. How many are really “Famous and Wealthy?”
Back to the economy. I read all the time where we are sliding into a worldwide recession unknown before. I agree it is worldwide and not just limited to the United States. Worse than the depression? I seriously do not think so. Is growth in jobs, retail sales and so forth slow? Without a question, it is moving at a snails pace, but moving nonetheless. In many respects this is in the long run better. I understand for some it may not be soon enough and I don’t disagree with this. As someone just reminded me we have to look at the bigger picture-a sustainable and long future. We are all geared to immediate gratification but in the ends it is not healthy.
Whose fault is it? I can offer you my opinion, we all have one. However, is finger pointing a real solution? Division, playing political games for personal advantage instead of holding the interests of all the nation in first place is the real issue and the majority of leadership in this country is responsible for it. Every incumbent in 2012 should fear for their job. Unfortunately, the choices will be about the same, because the ordinary American, who has more common sense than the current office holders could accumulate in a thimble, simply don’t have the money or resources needed to run for an office. They indeed are the elite and the country is far worse off because of it. I’m not sure “We the People” has much punch to it anymore. The country seems to be in the hands of a bunch of egomanics who can’t see much further than the end of their noses! Perhaps we need a good old fashioned revolution so that the average American citizen can re-claim their nation. Maybe we should be more interested in what is going on in our own nation before we get involved to the tune of billions of dollars. The freedom we fight for everywhere else but in our own country may not be as free as we think! In the midst of all of this exists a very much misguided media!
