        • Tennis wins 3 of 4 matches in 5 days May. 21, 2013
          The Saints played at New Ulm on Thursday and beat the Eagles 4-3. In singles, Connor Olson at one and Brock Mueller at three lost, but John Foss at two and Kilian Wehde at four clipped the wings of their Eagles opponents.
        • Baseball team wins 3, loses 2 for the week May. 20, 2013
          Such a large number of games in such a short stretch of time puts a strain on a pitching staff. The Saints have some depth on the mound, but Head Coach Jon Wilson had three pitchers split the innings in both games one and two of the St. Peter games. Five pitchers split the innings of the next double header and three pitchers went against New Ulm.
          Zack Glieter is safe at third for a split second in the first game against St. Peter, but slides past the bag and is tagged out.

          The St. James A’s opened their home season on Mother’s Day with an impressive 4-0 win over the Hanska Lakers. Two crafty veterans faced off on the mound as the A’s David Krause squared off against the Lakers’ Dayton Larson.
        • Saints host SCC Track Tournament May. 19, 2013
          The Saints have been very competitive in many of the meets they’ve participated in this year, but against the bigger and deeper schools of the SCC, the SJA athletes do not have an advantage.
          Katy Hedlund reaches back to receive the baton from Michaela Nordby in the girls 4x100 relay race at the SCC Tournament held in St. James on Tuesday. The girls team finished third in this event.

          The reason for so many road games was that some of the games postponed earlier in the season were made up as double headers. The Saints played doubleheaders at St. Peter and Waseca, played three tournament games at JCC and capped off the week against defending state champ New Ulm.

          The ideal conditions may have helped two girls set new school records in their events. Senior Aryn Eckstrom set a new school record in the 1600 meter run. Sophomore Katy Hedlund set a new school record in the high jump.

        • Golfers have a lot of matches in a few days May. 16, 2013
          Julia Boeve shot the low round for the Saints with a 54. The Coach said, “Julia played very steady golf and did a nice job of keeping the ball low and out of the wind. Jovanna Boeve also played well considering the conditions.”

          The SJA boys tennis team hosted the Blue Earth Area Buccaneers on Tuesday night and won with a dominant performance by sweeping all seven matches in straight sets.
          Brock Mueller follows through on a serve against BEA on Tuesday night. Mueller won in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.

          Last week we reported Sam Carlson of St. James was going to play two sports while attending Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter.

          His planned major field of study is mathematics education. Founded in 1963, Southwest Minnesota State University experiences continual growth by serving students on-campus, online and around the state.

          The Saints look like they’ve found themselves high jumpers for the next couple of years. Complementing Katy Hedlund’s efforts on the girls side, freshman Miguel Gonzalez won the boys high jump with a leap of 6 feet even.
        • Softballers play four games in five days May. 13, 2013
          Coach Steve Chapin has been rotating his young pitchers in the games the Saints have played. Julia Beckius came in the third and gave up eight earned runs in 1/3 inning. There were some defensive lapses, but Worthington also smacked the ball around pretty good.

          St. James High School Athletic Director Les Zellmann recently received a prestigious award. Les received the State Award of Merit at the Minnesota Interscholastic Conference which was held in St. Cloud last month.

          It is the second year in a row that Hildebrandt has won the award for having the highest GPA on the team.

          It’s been many years since Dean Hoffman played fast pitch softball for the St. James VFW team, but he has his memories and his scrapbook of the wins, the losses, the drama of the sport and the trip to the State Tournament.

          On the boys results Coach Walker said, “Mason finished 2nd with a solid round of 42. Mason continues to play very consistant golf. Tyler Witcraft played his first match of the year with us and shot a nice round of 45 to finish 4th over-all. Tyler also had 3 pars and was very good around the green. He got in trouble off the tee a couple of times but it was good to see Tyler play well.

        • Saints baseball team splits four games May. 9, 2013
          In the sixth inning, Bradley led off with a walk, was sacrificed over by Olsen as the pitcher tried to throw to second to get the lead runner both were safe. The next two Saints batters were retired and then Zack Gleiter was walked to load the bases. Walker Froehling was hit by a pitch to score Bradley from third giving St. James a 4-0 lead into the 7th inning.
          It appears that Saints first baseman puts the tag on a Mt. Lake baserunner, but the ump called the runner safe.  Pitcher Walker Froehling made the quick toss over to Stevens.

          “That is how you win track meets. Aryn Eckstrom had a great night winning both the 1600 and 3200. Emily Hurley also had a double win in shot and discus.”
          The Saints Aubrey Eckstrom wins the 400 meter race in an invitational track meet hosted by the Saints on Monday night.
        • Girls split a pair of softball games May. 6, 2013
          Heck of a way to come back after a three week ‘snow delay’ - have to play the defending state champs New Ulm Eagles. The Eagles looked like the state champs as they beat the Saints 14-1 in a game shortened to five innings by the 10 run rule.

        • Boys tennis gets 4 wins against 1 loss May. 5, 2013
          The boys tennis team hosted a tennis tournament on Saturday and the Saints won three matches against Columbia Heights, Stewartville and SW Christian.

        • Carlson to continue athletic career May. 4, 2013
          Gustavus does not offer athletic scholarships, but the school can structure financial aid in a way so it is not listed as an athletic scholarship. In Sam’s case the school calls it a Gold Scholarship.

        • Golfers shoot well in first home match May. 3, 2013
          Because several of the boys on the golf team play two sports, the boys team did not field a full team to keep score, but Golf Head Coach Mark Beltz said this about the boys efforts, “Mason Collier continued his hot start by scoring another 43.
        • Baseball Saints now 2-2 for the year May. 3, 2013
          After three plus weeks of ‘snow outs’ the Saints opened the season at New Ulm and lost to the Eagles 5-3. SJA out hit New Ulm 8-6, but couldn’t come up with the key hits at the right moment.
          Sometimes it really does help  when your first baseman is 6’5”. Walker Froehling does a big stretch to catch the throw from third baseman David Bradley. Is Walker’s toe on the bag? The ump thought so and punched the BEA Buc out!

          “Michaela was a fine player for us during her career. She was very diligent to work on improving her game and she always provided a lot of positive energy to the team environment.”

          Carlie Olson, who is working on the clinic, said the coaches at the clinic may be Twins scouts or college coaches who work with the Twins organization. Three or four coaches will run the event.

          From Thursday through Tuesday a total of 23 team events were canceled. The tennis team had a match canceled on Thursday, rescheduled the match for Tuesday and had it canceled again.

        • NWTF donates $20,000 to Martin County West High School Shooting Team Apr. 24, 2013
          The Martin County West High School Shooting Team was recognized at the Watonwan River Longbeards NWTF Banquet on April 12, 2013 at the St. James VFW.
          The Martin County West High School Shooting Team is recognized with a plaque by the National Wild Turkey Federation. The Federation gave away $80,000 in endowments to four Minnesota Schools. Martin County West received $20,000.
        • Weather’s been a big monkey wrench for Saints spring sports Apr. 24, 2013
          The Athletic Director said a priority would be to look at ways to make up conference games. He said that double headers for softball might be an option. Usually for conference games, the Saints would play a conference foe at home and then travel to their field to play an away game on another day. Trying to get the two conference games in might mean the Saints will host one team to play a double header or travel to play a double header. One team would lose a home game.
        • St. James Sports Hall of Fame established Apr. 23, 2013
          Athletes selected to the Hall of Fame must have graduated from St. James High School at least 15 years before admission to the Hall of Fame. The candidates must have shown mature accomplishments since graduation. Other criteria to be considered will include athletic accomplishments like:Having played on a conference or a Minnesota State High School League (district, section and region) championship team.Played in a state tournament.
