On Wednesday, October 21st, the following news became official: Comfrey and St. James will join forces for 2009-’10 and 2010-’11 in wrestling. This is an all-around win-win deal.
The Saints keep their status in Class A, Comfrey wrestlers join a historically successful team which now becomes stronger, and the St. James school district incurs no added cost -- Comfrey will handle transportation.
As indicated by the official application for cooperative sponsorship, there are as many as three wrestlers who competed last year for Comfrey. This could mean at least a 3-man boost to what looks to be an already-strong Saints team.
Comfrey High School has an enrollment of 85 students from 7th-12th grades.
“It's a 2 year deal,” stated Coach Hildebrandt via e-mail on Thursday. “I only expect 2 or 3 at this time. Hope for more every year after. The Comfrey Elementary Kids will be participating in our k-6 program as well.
“The Coop affords Comfrey students another opportunity as there is not a Wrestling program there at this time.
“Comfrey’s A.D. is a former Wrestler at ACGC. He will probably help us out by referring potential student/athletes.”
