Before a large and boisterous home crowd, the St. James wrestlers rolled over the New Ulm Eagles 67 to 7 on Tuesday night.
In doing so, the grapplers gave Coach Gene Hildebrandt his 450th career coaching win as the Saints head wrestling coach.
The wrestlers did it with a tsunami of pins against the Eagles. The Saints started with a pin, picked up three more in the middle weights, and after one of two losses in the meet, the Saints finished with four additional pins in the upper weight classes.
Eight pins in total, and seven of eight pins by the Saints were in the first period.
Cody Hanson at 106 lbs. started the match off with what turned out to be the fastest pin of the night for the Saints - in just 28 seconds of the first period.
Fans barely had a chance to settle down, when Hanson got the pin over Eagles seventh grader Ryan Wacker.
The Saints Ruben Bermudez got a forfeit at 113 lbs. It was one of two forfeits by New Ulm. Giovanni Alvarado picked up the other forfeit at 145 lbs.
Richy Soto dominated Luke Cihak at 120 lbs. winning a decision by the score of 14-3. This upped the team score to 16-0.
Taylor Berg dropped a tough match 126 lbs. to Jagger Hoffmann by the score of 8-4.
It was a wild match with many scrambles. Coach Hildebrandt praised Berg for his never quit effort, “but it seemed that whatever Berg tried was countered.”
Isaac Carreon won a hard fought match over Austin Brandes at 132 lbs. by the score of 6-3. Brandes got Carreon in a head lock with less than a minute to go in the match and it looked like Carreon was heading for his back, but Isaac gutted it out, regained control, and won the match. Hildebrandt said Carreon getting in a headlock was a good learning experience of something to avoid.
At 138 lbs. Kody Curry pinned his opponent at 3:21. In the 152 lbs. match, Mike Dahl pinned Cody Stark of New Ulm at 1:20 of the first period.
