On Saturday the St. James Area boys basketball team played their last game of the 2016-2017 regular season.The Saints ended up finishing third in the Big South West Conference with a conference record of 5-5 and an overall record of 15-10. Just above the Saitns was Fairmont who finished second in the conference. Waseca ran away with the conference title with a conference record of 9-1, and an overall record of 21-3. With their third place finish in the conference, the Saints were set to take on Redwood Valley in the Big South Crossover game.
St. James Area started the game behind the eight ball falling behind early. By the time the halftime horn rang the Saints were trailing 34-44.
The Saints were not about to go down easily. They were able to cut the lead to five points with four minutes left. This was as close as the Saints were able to get before the clock read zero. The final score of the game ended up being 83-71 in favor of Redwood Valley.
Leading the Saints in scoring was Sandin Skow, who was 9-18 from the field totaling 23 points. Lucas Fredin and Kobe Mohwinkel both pitched in 11 points. Brady Stevens was able to pull in 10 rebounds, but struggled scoring only amassing 8 points.
With the regular season in the books, St. James will now turn their focus to the playoffs. “We get a week off now before our first playoff game. I'm excited to see what this team can do,” said Hein. St. James locked up the five seed and for the second straight year the Saints will travel to Fairmont for the first round of the playoffs. Last year the Saints were able to pull off the upset. On March 6 St. James Area will attempt to once again come up with the away victory.
