Bracket Busters
We are in the throes of March Madness. The annual college basketball (both men’s and women’s) championship tournament. During this time they take 64 teams and place them in a tournament bracket, seeding from highest to lowest teams that the NCAA thinks are better than others. People can fill out brackets, guessing who they think will win all these games and possibly winning various prizes, or at least bragging rights. Our family does this every year, and it’s only for bragging rights. Looking at one of my daughters’ brackets, I asked, “You do know how the seeding thing works, right? The lower the number the better the team is expected to be.” She promptly replied, “I’m picking teams based on team names that I like.” Needless to say, her bracket is “busted”. What does that mean? Not many of the teams she picked to win are winning. The term is used more, though, in connection with upsets. Times when a double-digit seed beats a single digit seed, especially in the first round. It’s especially “heart breaking” if you chose that single digit seed to win the whole thing.
