Margie Olson

A Celebration of Life Service for Margie Olson, 101, of Ormsby was at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 12, 2022 at Zion Lutheran Church in Odin. Burial was in Long Lake Lutheran Cemetery in rural St. James.
Margie was called to her eternal rest on Sunday evening, March 6, 2022 at Temperance Lake Ridge in Sherburn. Visitation was held from 1 until 2 p.m., Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church in Odin. Personal words of comfort may be sent to the family online at www.kramerfuneralhome. com.

Margaret (Margie) Alta Beck Olson was born on September 20, 1920, number 9th in the family of 10 to Bertha and David Beck near West Union. She attended a rural school for 8 grades, graduating from Osakis High School in 1938. She then went to Alexandria Teachers’ Training, graduating in 1940. Later, in 1970, she graduated from Mankato State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. She taught 4 years in Martin County, in a rural school with all 8 grades. She was married to Sylvan Olson on December 23, 1944.
From 1945 to 1959, they raised 5 children. In 1960, she resumed teaching in a country school, District 12. In 1961, she began teaching 5th and 6th grades in Odin and was transferred to Butterfield in 1971, where she retired in 1986.
They lived on the “Olson” Century Farm where they farmed; crops and livestock. They were married for almost 45 year, with Sylvan dying on August 14, 1989. In 1988, they moved into a new home in Ormsby. After Sylvan died, Margie traveled to Norway, New England States, and state of Washington. She also spent many winters visiting her sister in Florida.
Margie was a member of Long Lake Lutheran Church until its closing in August, 2014. She spent many hours quilting with her WELCA church friends. She spent 25 years volunteering at the District 12 School at the Butterfield Threshing Bee. She also enjoyed vegetable gardening, sewing, upholstery work, summer canning, and mowing her large lawn.
She enjoyed attending her 13 grandchildren’s sporting events, school programs, plays, and concerts. She is survived by her four children: Pamela (Pasquale) Attenello of Bloomfield, CT, Kim (Nancy) Olson, Butterfield and their 3 children: Natalie (Ryan) Olson, Rutland, SD and children Jack and Ryan; Michelle (Cedric) Friesen, Holmen, WI and children Gavin, Mara, and Reece; Nathan (Karen) Olson, Butterfield and children Aidan and Adleigh. Kent (Pam) Olson, Ormsby and their 5 children: Joshua (Tarrah) Olson, Sioux Falls, SD and children Kylee, Brayden, Paxton; Shawnna (Jeremy) Winrich, St. James and children Clay, Allie, Brynlee; Tyler (Bethanie) Olson, Mankato and children Ivan, Etta, Mila; Caitlin (Ryan) Weitgenant, Sioux Falls, SD and child Emmett; Shane Olson, Sioux Falls, SD. Heidi (Terry) Engel, St. James and their 5 children: Hilary (Jason) Birdsell, Montgomery and children Mavrick, Paisley, Hattie; Andrea (Luke) Andert, Henderson and children Blake, Nora; Margo (Andrew) Spang, St. James; Taylor (Talia) Engel, Chaska; Connor (Lesley) Engel, Fargo, ND and child Henry; brother- and sisters-in-law, Orville Goskeson, Meta Olson, Ethel Christopher.
She was preceeded in death by her parents, husband Sylvan, daughter Juleann; sisters/brothers/in-laws: Rex and Hazel Beck, Genevieve and Clarence Selensky, Quentin and Harriet Beck, Rose and Edward Bjerkness, David and Estelle Beck, Hazel and Hans Langland, Kenneth and Eileen Beck, Oliver and Enid Beck, Beryl and Ernest Thornbloom; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Winfield Olson, Muriel (Vernon) Hagen, Eldon (LaVon) Olson, Verle (Marilyn) Olson, Ruth (Thomas) Mueller, Vernon Christopher, Irene Goskeson.
The Family would like to thank Pleasant View Good Samaritan, St. James and Temperance Lake Ridge, Sherburn for the care and compassion shown to Margie her last years.
