Donald Ervin Garten, 82, of Waldorf passed away unexpectedly on Monday, September 19, 2022, at Allina Health Faribault Medical Center. A Gathering of Family and Friends was from 11:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. on Friday, September 23, 2022, at the Donald and Patty Garten residence (75 Blashack Street, Waldorf, MN 56091). Private family interment will take place at St. Mary Cemetery Columbarium in rural Waseca. Dennis-Steffel-Omtvedt Funeral and Cremation Service in Janesville are handling arrangements.
It’s Hard to Be Humble, Really Hard
No, not planning on paying homage to a certain country music song… A recent lesson with my seniors led me to recall just how hard it is to put aside the desire to place oneself at any position other than the top. Discussion followed a video by Shaun Achor, author of The Happiness Advantage. Achor is an entertaining speaker and along with the humor was the idea that happiness = more productive work = getting the things you want, not the mantra of hard work = getting what you want = happiness.
Beyond Reason: My Daughter

Friends have asked why I haven’t written about my four-year-old daughter. Some know me as a doting dad and conjectured that I was too deeply in love to make fun of her. Incorrect. I only make fun of people I love. And golfers and pickle-ballers. Okay, I make fun of a lot of people. But that very much includes the ones I love. It’s how I show love. I admit it’s immature and there are better ways to show love. And yet… here we are.

Jump roping for heart health
St. Paul’s Lutheran School had its Kids Heart Challenge, formerly known as Jump Rope for Heart, event on Monday afternoon. Students were able to raise money to help the school reach its goal. This year 29 students helped the school raise money for The American Heart Association.

SJA Runners Lower Times and Raise Expectations

St. James Area runners are hitting their stride with favorable weather to match, winning the boys competition at a September 22nd meet at Glencoe and following with a runnerup finish in September 27th’s home meet. The girls team was paced by America Trejo and Katelyn Friesen, placing 8th and 9th respectively in both events.
Saints Net Another Tournament Championship

There is no place like home and the St. James Area girls tennis team proves that saying true, the latest example coming on September 24th as they swept the competition. A rematch against at St. Peter for the Big South Conference title on September 27th ended with a 5-2 decision in favor of the host school, complete results posted in next week’s issue.
Volleyball Earns First Victory, Tags Two More In Tourney

It took all of five sets to lock up the first win of the 2022 season but the Saints volleyball team wasted no time adding to the win column. After beating Fairmont on the 22nd, SJA chalked up a pair of triumphs in a home tournament on Saturday, the 24th.
