Normandale Community College announced its 2021 Fall Semester Dean’s list. Students named were enrolled in at least nine credits and had achieved a grade point average of at least 3.5. Madison Zavala of Madelia, was named to the Dean’s list.

Aimme Aleman wins District Spelling second year in a row

Spelling the most words correctly was the key element of what was happening in the high school's little theater on Thursday morning. St. James 5th through 8th graders were in there competing in the District Spelling Bee.

According to the CDC, Watonwan County reported 199 cases, 6 hospitalizations, and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 145 cases, 5 hospitalizations, and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic, it has reported 2,616 cases and 22 deaths.

Abolition of slavery in DC preceded the Emancipation Proclamation
Loretta Carter Hanes was researching at a library in her hometown of Washington, D.C., when she came across a piece of local history that surprised her. She learned that in April 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed the District of Columbia Compensated Emancipation Act, freeing some 3,100 enslaved people in the nation’s capital months before the Emancipation Proclamation, Juneteenth or the 13th Amendment.
