Abolition of slavery in DC preceded the Emancipation Proclamation

Loretta Carter Hanes was researching at a library in her hometown of Washington, D.C., when she came across a piece of local history that surprised her. She learned that in April 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed the District of Columbia Compensated Emancipation Act, freeing some 3,100 enslaved people in the nation’s capital months before the Emancipation Proclamation, Juneteenth or the 13th Amendment.

Watonwan County Soybean and Corn Board make donations

Watonwan County – Watonwan County farmers and their soybean checkoff dollars are giving back to local first responders this summer – and promoting the diverse uses of soybeans at the same time. The Watonwan County Soybean and Corn Board is following in the tire tracks of the Minnesota Soybean Research & Promotion Council (MSR&PC) and its 44 organized counties by turning the key on the “Driving Soy” campaign.

Jaelyn Haler signs to play at University of Sioux Falls

Jaelyn Haler signed to play tennis for the University of Sioux Falls, Head Coach Kevin Grebin announced Haler's signing last week. Haler is a multi sport athlete for the Saints, she played four sports during her four years of high school, tennis, basketball, volleyball, softball.
