Boasting
“Thus says the LORD: ‘Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the LORD.’” (Jeremiah 9:23–24 [ESV]) This is a passage that has been rolling around in my head recently. It is usually accompanied by the question “what are you boasting in?” When I think about boasting here I am not referencing what I am telling other people about to make me look better in their eyes. When I think of boasting, I am thinking of internal boasting, “What am I taking pride in?” This is the boasting that we really must watch.
