I Know My Savior

“I do not know this man you are talking about.” (Mark 14:71) The apostle Peter’s world had been flipped upside down in a matter of hours. Jesus had been arrested. Jesus was now standing trial. It didn’t take a legal expert to realize that things were not looking good for Jesus. The religious leaders wanted him dead and there was nothing that was going to stop them. Peter was confused. He had heard about the betrayal during the Passover meal. He had seen Jesus’ suffering in Gethsemane. Then the soldiers came. Judas betrayed Jesus. Peter was ready to fight! Ready to defend Jesus. He knew that these soldiers were no match for Jesus. Yet, Jesus put up no fight. He willingly was taken into custody. So, Peter, along with the rest of the disciples fled. Peter was scared and confused. None of this made sense. Now, he found himself in this courtyard saying he didn’t even know who Jesus was. In a matter of hours, faithful Peter went from telling Jesus: ““Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you,” (Mark 14:31) to calling down curses on himself to distance himself as much as possible from Jesus. “I do not know this man.”
