Elwood L.“Woody” Svalland

BUTTERFIELD – A Celebration of Life Service for Elwood L. “Woody” Svalland, 77, of rural Butterfield, Minnesota will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 10, 2022 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mountain Lake, Minnesota with Pastor Rick Bremseth officiating. There will be Military Honors by the Donald V. Larson V.F.W. Post #9607 of Butterfield at the church.

Elwood was called to his eternal rest on Tuesday evening, January 4, 2022 at Mayo Clinic Health System Hospital in St. James, Minnesota. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Sunday. January 9, 2022 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mountain Lake, Minnesota. Visitation will one hour prior to the services Monday at the Church. Elwood Lars Svalland was born on April 9, 1944 to Lars and Esther (Grams) Svalland in Windom, MN. He lived on a farm with his family near Windom and moved to a farm north of Butterfield at age five. Elwood was baptized in a rural Lutheran Church near Bergen and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Butterfield. He attended school in Butterfield and graduated with the class of 1962. Following graduation Elwood was employed at Tony Downs Foods in Butterfield and A.O. Smith Harvestore silos. He was drafted into the Army on June 10, 1965. After basic training, he attended Communications School in Fort Monmouth, NJ, followed by a tour in Viet Nam. He was honorably discharged on May 30, 1967. On February 17, 1968 he was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart Kathleen Hildebrandt at Trinity Lutheran in Mt. Lake, MN. They moved to a farm site north of Butterfield where they raised their two children. In 2011 they purchased the home where they currently reside. Elwood was employed with UPS in St. James serving the Fairmont area. In 1976 he worked for Farmfest, picking up and returning antique farm equipment from coast to coast. His next employment venture was with Hodgeman & Sons of Fairmont, working on the I-90 project, then 20 years for a business in St. James until his retirement in 2002. He also worked part-time as a custodian for the Butterfield-Odin School after retiring. As a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mt. Lake he served as an usher and was a great supporter of the CCOC. He was also a life member of the Donald Larson VFW Post #9607 –Butterfield Area, serving as a Trustee. He enjoyed watching the Twins & Vikings, western movies, cruising with Kathy in their Corvette, and occasionally fishing. On any sunny day Spring-Fall you would see him out mowing his lawn … favorite of all. His family knew he had a sweet tooth and could enjoy ice cream anytime along with cookies and a variety of sweet treats .

He is survived by his wife, Kathy Svalland of rural Butterfield, MN; son, Matthew (Michelle) Svalland of rural Odin, MN; daughter, Alison (Brian) Poch of Rochester, MN; six grandchildren: Megan Svalland, Macy Svalland, Maxwell Svalland, Abigail Poch, Amelia Poch, Andrew Poch; great-grandson, Drayden Moldan; sister, JoAnn (Ralph) Junker of Butterfield, MN; brother, Myron Svalland of Bigelow, MN; brothers and sisters-in-law: Emma (Ben) Amann of Rochester, MN, Margareta (Walter) Oeltjenbruns of Mountain Lake, Carolyn Chester of Windom, Yvonne Hildebrandt of Mountain Lake, MN, Wayne Hermanson of Owatonna, MN; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Elwood was preceded in death by his parents, Lars and Esther Svalland; brother, Lloyd Svalland; sisters & spouses: Sonja & Elvin Junker, Bertha & Robert Palm; in-laws: Duane Hildebrandt, Leroy Hildebrandt, Dorathea & Duane Olson, Jean Hermanson, Robert Chester and other relatives.
