What’s the Secret?

My wife and I were going through premarital counseling with a couple recently and we got to the subject of having a happy marriage. The root of having a happy marriage is taking responsibility for our feelings. In other words, circumstances and people don’t determine our feelings, we choose our feelings. I don’t say this as a regurgitation of the book we go through with the couple but as something we learned when we were going through premarital counseling 22 years ago. “Learned” might be an exaggeration, at least for myself. That’s what I heard 22 years ago. It probably took me at least a few years to actually learn it and truly put it into practice, and needless to say, I’m still not an expert at it.
