A half century of Saturday Night Live was commemorated last Sunday night. Many lives have been impacted over the course of that production run, whether it be the producer, cast members, hosts, or viewers.

While it’s very hard to convince the blind of the fact, the importance of visual art in this life cannot be overstated. Visual art is as limitless as the human imagination, seen with the eyes but felt in the bones, speaks to the mind but beats with a heart. Some say the visual art of Mark Rothko were made for the soul.

School board hears ways students are learning to read at Northside

The St. James school board held its meeting this month on Monday, Feb 10. Northside Principal Liam Dawson and Literacy Lead Michele Chapin presented the science of reading to review what helps students learn to read based on science and studies done. They discussed how each curriculum teachers have been training on, like LETRS, Wit and Wisdom, and UFLI have been working with the areas of reading to help students.

My interview this month is with Janice Jensen, who will be 90 on Feb. 24. She is a very lovely and passionate person who has been very active here in St. James all her life.

Madelia Health Foundation Announces Four Renewable Health Care Scholarships for 2025

The Madelia Health Foundation is proud to announce the availability of four renewable scholarships for area students pursuing careers in health care. Since the inception of our scholarship program in 2007, more than $35,000 has been awarded to students from the area. Each scholarship is renewable for up to four consecutive years, providing ongoing support as recipients continue their education.

The University of Minnesota Duluth announced Emily Lehman of Madelia being named to the fall semester Dean’s List for achieving a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Sportsmanship Marks BBB game at Jackson

The St. James Area boys traveled to Jackson County Central High School on February 17th for a Big South Conference contest that went the way of the hosts by a 91-78 score. The Saints basketball community also brought a gesture of support for JCC’s coach who formerly held the same position at SJHS.
